    This essay is based on material prepared for an introductory essay in a special issue of the journal, Roeper Review, published in April 2001. The purpose of the special issue was to provide educators of the gifted with descriptive and critical perspectives on new and emerging intelligence theories that could potentially influence educational practice. Readers are strongly encouraged to read the special issue.
    7 Why Should We Identify Gifted Children?
    An article from The Centre for Talented Youth, Ireland, about the reasons to identify and appropriate educate gifted children: gifted children need appropriate academic challenge, have a right to be valued by their education system, the importance of finding a peer group, and to be accepted as an individuals.
    8 Neither freak nor geek: The gifted among us
    In a 1999 article Jim Delisle concludes a discussion regarding the TV show "Freaks and Geeks" and false egalitarianism by saying, "Let us respect gifted children enough that we will acknowledge their abilities and insights as a natural part of who they are--not better or worse than anyone else, neither freak nor geek, but merely a member of our diverse human family, where 'one size fits all' just doesn't fit anyone."
