Advanced Learning Plans (ALPs)
ALP Guidance from the CDE Office on Gifted Education:
Parents are a required participant in the ALP process and monitoring a student's progress. They are members of the ALP team and receive notification of the ALP development. If you are not notified about your student's ALP, ask to be involved.

Questions for parents to ask:
  • What are my child's area(s) of strength included in the Advance Learning Plan? Remember this is a living document so in third grade, math may have been the only "strength area" identified, but your child is now in sixth grade and is a musical child prodigy in bagpipes, make sure music is on that ALP!
  • What goal has been determined to meet my child(s) academic or affective growth? Make sure you understand and agree with the goal, since it is something you, your child, and your teacher will work on together to achieve.
  • How will progress be monitored and reported to parents?
  • How will I know when the goal is completed and celebrated? (Management of expectations for all.)

The ALP needs to have meaning to your child and to you. It is not just a piece of paper, it is a guide to help your student grow and develop into the person they have the potential to be. It takes a partnership with you, your child, and your child's teacher to make the ALP become a living document.

What You Need to Know Before Your Gifted Child Takes the PSAT
Thank you to Ginny Riley for writing "One Day Matters: A Mom's Journey" about her son who was a National Merit Semi-Finalist at Conifer High School. She brings to light how gifted students often score lower each time they take the PSAT, why this happens, and how to prevent it. Check with your high school for PSAT dates.
